RECAP + HIGHLIGHTS: York United vs. Cavalry FC (May 2, 2025)
Cavalry FC picked up their first win of the 2025 CPL season on Friday night at York Lions Stadium, 2-1 over York United.
Tobias Warschewski scored in the first half, and substitute Fraser Aird added the winner in the 69th minute. Julian Altobelli added his league-leading fifth for the Nine Stripes, but it wasn't enough on the night for the hosts.
Cavalry were forced to make an early substitution in the 16th minute, as Michael Baldisimo came off with an injury and was replaced by Max Piepgrass. For the 21-year-old Calgary native, it was his first CPL minutes since 2021 -- although he did score midweek for Cavalry against Edmonton Scottish in the Canadian Championship.
Neither side were able to truly break the other down through the opening half hour. York had some decent chances from the wide areas, and won a few corners, but struggled to translate that into anything in the box.
Cavalry, meanwhile, pressed well and created a few opportunities through that, but York managed to contain any dangerous movements.
In the 33rd minute, Cavalry won a set piece in a dangerous area down the right flank after some good work from Nicolas Wähling, who had started the match at right-back. Musse's short delivery, however, went right into the path of Altobelli who broke the other way.
York then had a chance off of a Cavalry miscue, as a Wähling pass upfield deflected perfectly into the path of Altobelli. The York striker looked to be in alone, but Callum Montgomery reacted quickly to get back and put in an outstanding last-ditch tackle.
In the 42nd minute, Cavalry opened the scoring. Again, it was Wähling down the right flank that sent in a cross, which deflected slightly to Warschewski in the box. The Cavalry striker took one touch to take the ball down, before smashing it home with his right foot.
York won one last corner just before the half-time whistle. Shola Jimoh's pinpoint corner delivery found Altobelli, whose flicked header skimmed the head of Callum Montgomery and over Marco Carducci. It was the York striker's league-leading fifth goal of the season.
Cavalry had one last chance in first-half stoppage time with Musse breaking in behind, but Diego Urtiaga got low to deny his chance. After a quiet start, it was quite the flurry of action as both sides headed to their respective rooms with the score 1-1.
After another slow start to the second half, both sides made changes just before the hour mark. Cavalry brought in Caniggia Elva and Aird, while York United added Massimo Ferrin to the mix.
Elva was quickly into the fray, beating Oswaldo León down the byline and cutting a ball across goal which forced a good diving intervention from Urtiaga.
In the 69th minute, Cavalry regained the lead. On a throw-in into the York box, Elva flicked the ball into the path of Camargo, who sent it across the box. Riley Ferrazzo initially did well to shield off Musse in the middle, but the ball fell to Aird. The Cavalry full-back sent a shot across goal, through the body of Urtiaga to make the score 2-1.
With the lead, Cavalry kept pressing, winning several dangerous set pieces around the York box. In the 80th minute, Musse forced a clearance from Urtiaga on a near-Olimpico. Two minutes later, Elva was denied from close range on a great chance in tight.
York had a few late chances to equalize. They won a good free-kick in second-half stoppage time, but Botello's strike went directly into the Cavalry wall. Minutes later, Adonijah Reid hit the post from just outside the box.
York are now winless in their past four, having not won since their opening match of the season. Cavalry, meanwhile, continue their incredible record in the CPL in May, having lost just one of 19 matches played in the month.
