Highlights

Pacific FC and Cavalry FC traded blows in a thrilling match at Starlight Stadium on Sunday, one that finished 3-3 after a late goal from Cavalry's Daan Klomp.

Despite being eliminated from playoff contention, Pacific nearly threw a wrench in Cavalry's aspirations with a victory, but Cavalry clawed back a critical point at the death to keep a firm hold on the third-place spot. After fourth-place York United and the fifth-place Halifax Wanderers drew on Saturday, that draw ensures that Cavalry remains three points clear of York and four points clear of the Wanderers with two games to go.

Yann Toualy had the first good chance of the game for Pacific, as he snuck behind Cavalry's backline to get on the end of a nice through ball from Alejandro Díaz, but his shot flew right into the hands of Cavalry's Marco Carducci.

At the other end, Cavalry had a fantastic chance at goal in the 9th minute, as Ali Musse stepped up to take a free kick that he had won at the edge of the box, and he nearly capitalized on the opportunity, slamming a powerful shot into the crossbar. Then, moments later, Goteh Ntignee had a good chance for Cavalry, as he managed to break off on a 2v1, but he harmlessly sent a left-footed shot wide of the mark from a good position.

Eventually, though, Cavalry's persistence would pay off in the 22nd minute. Just minutes after they almost scored from a Tobias Warschewski header that was saved by Pacific's Sean Melvin before being eventually ruled offside, Melvin was left powerless as Ntignee dribbled through a couple of Pacific players before firing a shot off his hands and into the net.

Continuing a good period, Cavalry had a good chance to make it 2-0 in the 31st minute, as the ball fell to Sergio Camargo inside the box, but he curled a low shot into Melvin's waiting hands.

Finally able to relieve some of the pressure, Pacific had a good chance off a wide free kick in the 33rd minute, but Sean Young headed Marco Bustos's cross just wide of the goal from a decent position inside the box.

Soon after, though, Young would avenge that chance, as he wasn't going the miss the next opportunity that fell to him. After receiving a bouncing ball inside the box, he did well to settle himself for a right-footed shot, curling it into the top corner with precision to tie the game at 1-1.

Having reached half-time with the game drawn, that stalemate wouldn't last long, however, as Cavalry regained their lead shortly after the break.

It came on a back-and-forth play, as Bustos had a dangerous shot at one end of the pitch, before Cavalry flew down the other way on a counter-attack, with Musse finding Ntignee with a nice through ball that Ntignee would put away with his left foot to make it 2-1.

Eager to knot the game up once more, Pacific nearly found that equalizer in the 58th minute, as Roshawn Juhmi had a shot from distance after his side had won the ball high up the pitch, and he forced an awkward save out of Carducci on the play.

Pacific would get a big boost in the 62nd minute, however, as Cavalry's Michael Baldisimo earned his second yellow of the game after delaying a restart, which put the hosts up a player for the last half hour of the game.

To their credit, Pacific would instantly take advantage of that extra space, too, as they tied the game in the 65th minute. After a dangerous cross from Christian Greco-Taylor, his ball found the head of Sami Keshavarz, who nodded the ball into the bottom corner of the net to make it 2-2.

Then, shortly after, Pacific took the lead for the first time in the game in the 70th minute, as Bustos found Díaz with a careful cutback, and Díaz curled a perfect strike off the post and in from the edge of the box to put his side up 3-2.

They then almost doubled that lead in the 81st minute, as Dario Zanatta got on the end of a nice through ball from Greco-Taylor, but his chipped attempt went just wide after looping over the hands of Carducci.

After that, Cavalry sustained a nice wave of attacks, but weren't able to turn anything into chances of note. Because of that, that opened the door for another big Pacific chance in the last minute of regular time, as Mattias Vales found Keshavarz with a nice cutback, but he sent his shot just wide of the goal.

Eventually, though, Cavalry found their chance in the third minute of stoppage time, and they made sure to convert it. After sending a ball long on a free kick, Cannigia Elva did well to flick the ball into the path of Daan Klomp, who slotted home on his right foot to give his team a dramatic equalizer.

As a result, both teams were left to settle for a draw, one that they'll perhaps feel is fair given that both will feel they threw away chances to take home all three points.
