RECAP + HIGHLIGHTS: Pacific FC vs. Cavalry FC | August 8, 2025
Matchday #17 of the Canadian Premier League concluded with a bang on Vancouver Island, as Pacific claimed a late win over Cavalry at Starlight Stadium on Monday.
They left it late, as Sean Young only found the net with the game's opening goal in the second minute of second-half stoppage time, but that'd be enough for them to pick up three massive points in their push towards the fifth and final playoff spot.
As for Cavalry, they picked up their third straight loss, leaving them 12 points adrift of first-place Forge in their race towards the CPL Shield, showing why they'll have felt frustrated to lose the way they did in the end.
To begin the match, Pacific almost had the ball in the net after two minutes, as Georges Mukumbilwa got on the end of a perfectly weighted Eric Lajeunesse long ball, but Bradley Kamdem Fewo would nicely clear his chip attempt. Then, on the ensuing corner, Pacific almost scored a worldie, as Lukas Browning Lagerfeldt hit a dangerous volley, but his shot looped just over the top of the goal.
Continuing their bright start, Pacific almost came close to scoring again in the 4th minute, as Josh Heard found Dario Zanatta with a nice cutback, but his low shot would be well saved by Cavalry's goalkeeper, Marco Carducci.
At the other end, Cavalry had a nice look of their own in the 11th minute, as Fraser Aird whipped in a cross for Tobias Warschewski to attack, but his powerful header sailed just over the net. Then, Diego Gutiérrez had an attempt from distance for Cavalry, but his shot also sailed just over, as he was unable to find the target on the play.
Shortly after, Kamdem Fewo had a nice shot attempt in the 20th minute, as he turned and fired a shot from close range, but his attempt sliced just wide of the goal.
Cavalry came closest of both teams to opening the scoring in the 39th minute, as Warschewski picked up the ball on the left and cut inside to fire a shot, sending his low attempt off the wrong side of the post and out, as he almost managed to sneak his shot into the bottom left corner.
Meanwhile, Pacific had a great chance of their own in the first minute of stoppage time, as Heard found Alejandro Díaz with a perfect low cross, but Pacific's striker looped a shot off the crossbar and out to keep the game knotted at 0-0.
On the other side of the break, Cavalry nearly caught Pacific out on a corner, as Aird found Warschewski with a perfect delivery, but Warschewski was once again unable to keep his header under the crossbar.
Then, Pacific almost scored on a corner of their own in the 59th minute, as the ball fell to Aly Ndom in a good spot, but he sent his right-footed shot well wide of the mark.
Continuing a back-and-forth start to the half, Cavalry then had a great chance to score in the 67th minute, as Warschewski found Mihail Gherasimencov with a nice cross towards the back post, but Gherasimencov bundled his shot just wide of the goal from close range.
After that, the game settled down for a bit, as both teams found a rhythm. As a result, the next good chance didn't come until the 84th minute, when Warschewski teed up Michael Baldisimo for a good opportunity inside the box, but his shot went just past the post.
Less than a minute later, Cavalry had another good look as Jay Herdman found Ayman Sellouf with a nice cross towards the back post, but Sellouf's header flew just over the mark.
Eventually, however, Pacific finally found a breakthrough in the second minute of stoppage time. After a dangerous ball into the box from Christian Greco-Taylor, the ball pinballed around before finding Sean Young, and he fired a shot into the back of the net to put his team up 1-0.
They almost doubled their lead deep into stoppage time, as Marco Bustos danced into the box and nearly chipped Carducci, but his shot just landed on the top of the net.
In the end, they didn't need that insurance marker, as they secured the victory from there, doing well to keep Cavalry away from their goal amid a late push for an equalizer.
