RECAP + HIGHLIGHTS: Cavalry FC vs. York United (June 8, 2025)

Red hot Cavalry FC picked up their fifth win in their past six CPL matches on Sunday, 2-1 over York United.

In front of a club regular season record crowd of 5,114 at ATCO Field, a brace from Sergio Camargo delivered victory for the Cavs. Massimo Ferrin has the lone goal for York, his first CPL goal since joining the Nine Stripes.

Through injuries and international duty, both sides were forced to make significant changes to their lineups. For York, 20-year-old Ivan Pavela came back into net, while Luca Accettola, the 21-year-old who was selected fifth overall in the 2025 CPL-U SPORTS Draft, made his first professional start in midfield.

On the Cavalry side of things, Eryk Kobza returned from injury to make his first league start of the season, while regulars Shamit Shome, Nicolas Wähling and Levi Laing were out of the squad.

Cavalry started on the front foot, and not even two minutes into the match, opened the scoring. A great run down the left flank saw Jay Herdman pick out Camargo at the top of the box. The veteran Cavalry midfielder took a touch and sent a lovely low shot past Pavela to give the hosts an incredibly early 1-0 lead.

It was the second consecutive game that Camargo had scored in the second minute of a match, after also opening the scoring against Forge in Hamilton in a 1-1 draw last week.

The Nine Stripes came incredibly close to equalizing in the 10th minute, after Adonijah Reid cut in behind and knocked the ball past Cavalry goalkeeper Marco Carducci. However, Callum Montgomery got back and cleared the ball off of the line with some outstanding defending.

Reid was the main source of danger from York through the first few minutes, breaking the lines on multiple occasions with some lovely dribbling and direct play.

In the 37th minute, it was Reid who again ignited the attack, getting in behind before Carducci came out of his net and took the ball off his foot. The ball fell to the foot of Julian Altobelli, but his shot was blocked brilliantly by Eryk Kobza before Orlando Botello sent a shot wide.

Then, in the 39th minute, the ball fell to the foot of Botello in the box, who tried to show patience but his strike was blocked again, this time by Fraser Aird.

Cavalry had one last excellent chance before the half-time whistle. Ali Musse went in bravely on a cross into the box and knocked it into his own path, he turned and tried to hit the ball past Pavela, but Oswaldo León got in the way.

Despite a flurry of great opportunities, Cavalry held their 1-0 lead into the half-time break.

Five minutes into the second half, Cavalry extended that lead. Off of a free kick routine in the 51st minute, the ball bounced around in the box, and again it was Camargo who was the first to arrive to smash home his second of the match.

Just a minute later, however, York got themselves back into the match with Ferrin's first of the season. The York attacker headed home an excellent cross from Max Ferrari to cut the score to 2-1.

Tobias Warschewski had a moment of danger in the 61st minute as he broke in behind on a great ball forward from Camargo, but he couldn't round Pavela and York were able to get back and clear away the chance. In the 71st minute, Pavela denied Musse on a breakaway as Cavalry began finding increased chances in transition as York chased an equalizer.

York held the majority of the ball in the late stages of the match as they constantly probed the Cavalry backline, looking for any space they could find in a compact defensive shape from the hosts.

With the win, Cavalry FC are now undefeated in their past six CPL matches, eight in all competitions. They move up into second place in the table, four points behind Atlético Ottawa with a game in hand.
