RECAP + HIGHLIGHTS: Cavalry FC vs. Vancouver FC | August 29, 2026

Cavalry FC moved to the top of the Canadian Premier League table on Saturday after defeating Vancouver FC 1-0 at ATCO Field.

With another three points at home, the Cavs stretched their unbeaten streak to six games (five of them wins) and leapfrogged Forge FC to claim pole position in the race for the CPL Shield.

Vancouver, meanwhile, suffered a third straight loss, although they still have a strong grip on the fourth and final playoff spot with a five-point cushion.

Neither side offered many surprises in their starting lineups for Saturday's match; Vancouver, with several members of the squad recovering from an illness, came out with a strong lineup; they welcomed key players Kian Proctor and Lys Mousset back into the squad, although Nicolas Mezquida remained on the bench.

Cavalry, meanwhile, made one change to the team that comfortably beat Atlético Ottawa last week: nineteen-year-old James McGlinchey made his first professional start, slotting into midfield as Sergio Camargo dropped to the bench for the day.

The hosts were, perhaps as expected, in command of possession for most of the first half, but the visitors VFC were comfortable defending. They held Cavalry to just 0.29 expected goals and six touches in the box, although goalkeeper Callum Irving did need to make three good saves to keep it scoreless at halftime.

Cavalry didn't need to adjust much in the break, though. They continued to trust their plan, repeatedly testing Vancouver with Tobias Warschewski and Caniggia Elva running relentlessly at defenders.

At last, just before the clock hit an hour, the Cavs found their opener. Harry Paton won a free kick well outside the box, and Warschewski floated a good ball into traffic in the penalty area. The hanging cross drifted above Irving's arm, finding left-back Bradley Kamdem Fewo at the far post for a header in to make it 1-0.

Vancouver came alive after conceding the opener, and they desperately sought an equalizer to help stabilize their place in the standings. They troubled Cavalry more than they had in the first half, spending more time on the ball in the attacking half, but the Cavs' well-organized defence kept them out of the truly dangerous areas.

The visitors improved as the clock dwindled, finally testing Nathan Ingham with a few well-taken shots on target, but still struggled to create numerical overloads or get multiple attackers in the box.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, that was the closest they would come; they had two FVS challenges for penalty kicks denied in the final 10 minutes, and mustered just 11 touches in the box.

It ended 1-0, concluding a relatively straightforward afternoon in Calgary.

Cavalry would perhaps wish they'd made more of an imprint and scored another goal or two, but they were content to hold off the Eagles in the late stages and preserve a clean sheet.

Vancouver, meanwhile, left frustrated by a toothless attacking performance, are now looking over their shoulder a bit. FC Supra du Québec, who beat Forge on Friday night, sit five points behind VFC for the final playoff spot.

Supra will travel to B.C. next weekend for a match that Vancouver may now feel they absolutely must win.
