RECAP + HIGHLIGHTS: Cavalry FC vs. Halifax Wanderers | July 18, 2026
The Halifax Wanderers rescued a point from their road clash against Cavalry FC, as both sides settled for a 1-1 draw at ATCO Field on Saturday.
After Tobias Warschewski opened the scoring for Cavalry with a penalty early in the second half, Isaiah Johnston responded with a goal in the 77th minute to claw back a point for the Wanderers.
As a result, Cavalry missed an opportunity to narrow the gap between themselves and first-place Forge, which now sits at four points, while the Wanderers will finish this weekend just one point behind fourth-place Vancouver after the Eagles picked up a big victory on Friday.
After a lively first few minutes from the Wanderers, Cavalry started to settle into this game, as they hunted for an early goal.
Ali Musse had their first good chance of the game, as he cut inside from the right and fired a shot from distance, curling his outside-of-the-boot shot just over the goal. Then, shortly after, Warschewski had a nice chance in the box, as he turned and fired a shot after a good cutback from Goteh Ntignee, but Warschewski's powerful low attempt was nicely blocked by Halifax's Jefferson Alphonse.
At the other end, the Wanderers had their first shot on target in the 19th minute, as Johnston stepped up to take a dangerous free kick at the edge of Cavalry's box, but he sent a powerful shot right into the waiting hands of goalkeeper Nathan Ingham.
In the 29th minute, Cavalry's Amer Didić nearly had a moment of magic, as the centre back decided to try his luck with a shot from distance, and his knuckling attempt nearly eluded the hands of goalkeeper Marco Carducci, who had to work hard to make a good save.
Then, in the 32nd minute, the ball fell to Ali Musse at the edge of the box after a darting run into the final third from Ntignee, but Musse's tame shot was easily saved by Carducci.
From there, though, the game would reach half-time with no further chances, leaving both teams to regroup and to find more offensive thrust in the second half.
Certainly, Cavalry seemed to have made that a point of emphasis in the break when seeing how they started the second half, as they immediately came out and found a goal within minutes of the start of the new stanza.
After another probing run from Ntignee, he was fouled inside the box by Jefferson Alphonse, winning a penalty for his team.
Unsurprisingly, Warschewski stepped up to take it, and he was clinical with his attempt, driving the ball into the bottom left corner to put his team up 1-0.
Eager to find a quick response, however, Johnston had another good chance for the Wanderers in the 58th minute, as he fired a shot from distance, one that stung the palms of Ingham.
Meanwhile, Ntignee finally had a chance of his own in the 63rd minute, as he cut inside and fired a low right-footed shot towards goal, slicing his attempt just wide of the near post.
Then, moments later, Lorenzo Callegari stepped up to take a free kick from distance, but his shot sailed just a few feet over the goal.
Eventually, though, the Wanderers' pressure would yield an equalizer, and unsurprisingly, Johnston would figure prominently in that. After a dangerous cross from Jason Bahamboula, who had just come onto the pitch, the ball fell to Johnston, who slammed the ball into the bottom right corner on the half-volley to make it 1-1.
Wanting to help his team regain the lead, Ntignee had a nice run down the left flank in the 86th minute, but he sliced his shot well wide of the goal. Right after, Eryk Kobza had a shot from distance, as the ball fell to him nicely in a good position, but he sliced his half-volley just wide of the post.
Continuing their push for a late winner, Cavalry had a great chance on a corner, as Adam Pearlman found himself unmarked in the box, but he was unable to turn Tobias Warschewski's cross on goal, sending it just wide.
Then, Jay Herdman had a fantastic chance in the seventh minute of stoppage time, as Warschewski found him with a cross into the box that Niko Myroniuk narrowly got a touch on, but Herdman's looping header was just caught by the desperate hands of Carducci.
Having absorbed all of that pressure, the Wanderers nearly found a shock winner in the 11th minute of stoppage time, as Adonijah Reid fired a shot from distance, one that almost snuck into Cavalry's goal after a big deflection. Luckily for Cavalry, however, Ingham was alert and on his toes, and managed to just recover in time to make a big save.
Therefore, despite the frantic ending, the game would end 1-1, leaving both teams to split the spoils on the day.
