HIGHLIGHTS: Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Tigres UANL (Leg 1, Feb. 7, 2024)
The Vancouver Whitecaps were held 1-1 by Tigres UANL in Leg 1 of their 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup opener on Vancouver Island, as newcomer Damir Kreilach opened the scoring in the first half ahead of a late Andre-Pierre Gignac stunner.
Playing at Starlight Stadium in front of plenty of B.C.-based support, the Whitecaps came out swinging in the first half, dominating much of the play before Ryan Gauld and Brian White connected to find Kreilach for his first goal with his new club. And Vancouver looked to have doubled their advantage via Brian White, but VAR ultimately ruled their second effort off due to a missed offside on Alessandro Schopf.
It all culminated in an incredible free-kick equalizer by Gignac, with the French striker hitting a perfect dead ball with a curling shot into the top corner to beat Yohei Takaoka and earn a draw in Leg 1. The two teams will now meet for Leg 2 at the Estadio Universitario on Feb. 14, and that match is available to watch right here on OneSoccer.
