HIGHLIGHTS: Atlético Ottawa vs. Cavalry FC (September 2, 2023) | Presented by tonybet
Cavalry FC picked up their first-ever win at TD Place on Saturday evening, beating Atlético Ottawa 2-1 thanks to William Akio’s 97th-minute winner.
The visitors were the ones on the front foot for much of the opening 25 minutes, with Sergio Camargo and Gareth Smith-Doyle having shots blocked in the early stages of the match, and Jesse Daley firing a shot over the bar as well.
Ottawa had to wait until the 26th minute for their first attempt on goal, a header in the box from Malcolm Shaw that didn’t miss the net by much — before Callum Montgomery got his head on the ball at the other end of the pitch moments later, but he too missed over the bar. Nate Ingham made an important save to deny the first shot on target of the match a few minutes later, diving to his left to parry away a shot from Daan Klomp.
Cavalry’s persistence was finally rewarded in the 45th minute, as Sergio Camargo gave his side the lead just before halftime. After receiving a pass from Jesse Daley at the edge of the penalty area, Camargo beat Karl Ouimette on the dribble, rounded Nathan Ingham, and slotted the ball into the back of the net from a tight angle.
The two sides traded opportunities at the start of the second half, with Charlie Trafford and Sam Salter getting shots away for their sides, but both failed to hit the target. Smith-Doyle also came close with a volley in the 64th minute, but his redirection went just over Ingham’s crossbar.
Atlético Ottawa pushed for an equalizer in the second half, but ran into a sturdy Cavalry side that wasn’t giving them an inch. It took a moment of magic from Luke Singh in the 88th minute to beat Marco Carducci, with the Ottawa defender firing the ball into the back of the net with a brilliant volley from a set piece to tie the game at 1-1.
