Mauro Biello's tenure as interim head coach of the Canadian men's national team started with a tough showing as Japan defeated Les Rouges 4-1 in Niigata in an early-morning international friendly on Friday.

Goals from Ao Tanaka, Keito Tanaka and an own goal by Alphonso Davies proved the difference between the two sides on the day, with substitute Junior Hoilett pulling one back for a consolatory goal late on.

A saved penalty on Jonathan David further compounded Canada's defeat, with the team needing to regroup quickly ahead of November's Concacaf Nations League window.
