Form Guide: Jebbison, Bair in great form in Europe, a CanMNT injury update

The race for CanMNT’s World Cup striker spots has gotten a lot more interesting in recent weeks, with several scoring big goals across Europe this past weekend.
The race for CanMNT’s World Cup striker spots has gotten a lot more interesting in recent weeks, with several scoring big goals across Europe this past weekend.
Unfortunately, this week’s form guide also features more tough news about injuries to CanMNT players, as there were a few which could also alter Jesse Marsch’s plans for November.
This edition is mostly focused on the Canadian men’s national team, as women’s football is on an international break, but there were a few notable performances from CanWNT players at the collegiate level.
Here are the biggest stories and performances from Canadian internationals this past week:
Jebbison, Bair score as CanMNT strikers making case for call-up
Jesse Marsch has been fairly consistent with which strikers he has called into camp in recent months, but the battle on the bubble of his squad has heated up in recent weeks due to a scintillating run of form from a few Canadian attackers in Europe.
This weekend, Daniel Jebbison had a goal and an assist against his former side, Sheffield United, in the Championship in a 3-2 victory. After a bit of a slow start to the campaign with Preston North End on loan from Bournemouth, Jebbison has been excellent of late, with four goal contributions in his past four matches – starting three of the past four.
In Switzerland, meanwhile, Theo Bair’s loan move to Lausanne is going exceptionally well. After a brace this weekend in a 5-1 win of FC Basel, Bair now has five goals in six matches in the league, and seven goals in all competitions since joining the Swiss side on loan from Auxerre in France. Both are certainly giving Marsch something to think about as he plans out his squad for November’s international window.
Annabelle Chukwu
After not being called into this CanWNT camp due to a mutual agreement with Notre Dame, Chukwu showed just why she has been so important for the Fighting Irish this year.
This past Thursday, Chuckwu opened the scoring against Virginia Tech in a 5-0 victory with a lovely goal. It was her fourth straight game with a goal, and she now has 11 goals, and two assists, in 15 matches this season in her second campaign in the NCAA.
With the NCAA Championship right around the corner, Chukwu will go in with plenty of confidence for the number-one-ranked Notre Dame.
A tough week of injury news for CanMNT
Unfortunately, despite several Canadians finding the scoresheet this past week, there was some bad news as well on the injury front.
On Thursday, Alistair Johnston made his long-awaited return for Celtic, starting in a Europa League match against Sturm Graz. He went just 26 minutes before having to be removed due to a hamstring injury, the same injury that has kept him out since August. The good news is that per the latest update from Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, it doesn’t appear to be as bad as it first appeared. Still, it is a false start to the return of the Canadian full-back and one that will likely keep him out of November’s window for Canada.
A potentially even more disheartening story came out of Hull City this weekend, where Liam Millar also suffered a hamstring injury after nearly a year away from football with a torn ACL. Millar is expecting a scan on Monday to reveal the extent of the injury. He had been excellent for both club and country since returning, including scoring in a 2-1 win over Leicester City on Tuesday.

Derek Cornelius scored for Rangers in a 3-1 victory over Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.
Kamal Miller played for the full 90 minutes and scored against Real Salt Lake in a 3-1 win in the MLS Wild Card match. He also went the full 90 in a 2-1 loss to San Diego FC in the playoff first round.
Niko Sigur scored a screamer for Hajduk Split on Friday in a 3-1 win over HNK Gorica, his first of the season. After a slow start to the campaign, Hajduk have now won four straight matches and sit top of the table in Croatia once again.
Cyle Larin scored his first goal for Feyenoord in a 3-1 win over Panathinaikos midweek in the Europa League. He also came off the bench as a late substitute in a 3-2 loss to PSV Eindhoven in the league.
Max Crépeau has been an unused substitute in both of the Portland Timbers' playoff matches so far. Rumours from The Athletic’s Joshua Kloke have linked him with a potential move to Toronto FC this off-season.
Luc de Fougerolles went the full 90 on Saturday as Dender drew 1-1 with Westerlo in Belgian league action.
Joel Waterman went 90 minutes on Wednesday in a 3-1 win over Orlando City SC in the Wild Card round, before going the full 90 again in a 2-2 (4-2) loss on penalties to the Philadelphia Union in the MLS Cup playoff first round.
Nathan Saliba started and went 84 minutes in a 1-0 loss to Charleroi against Anderlecht on Friday. Stephen Eustáquio was an unused substitute in a 2-0 loss for Porto to Nottingham Forrest in the Europa League.
Ismaël Koné went 81 minutes in a 1-0 loss for Sassuolo against Roma on Sunday.
Tajon Buchanan started and went 66 minutes in a 2-0 loss to Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday. He then came off the bench for Villarreal at the weekend in a 2-0 win over Valencia. Tani Oluwaseyi was an unused substitute against Valencia, but did come off the bench in the 66th minute against City.
Jacob Shaffelburg started and played 75 minutes in a 3-1 loss to Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami in the MLS Cup Playoffs first round.
Promise David started and went 61 minutes in a 4-1 loss to Inter Miami in the Champions League. He then started and played 76 minutes in a 2-0 win for Union Saint-Gilloise against STVV in league action.
Jonathan David’s tough start to life with Juventus continued. He came off the bench for the first 15 minutes against Real Madrid in a 1-0 loss in the Champions League. He then went 66 minutes in a 1-0 loss to Lazio on Sunday. After an eight match winless run, Juventus manager Igor Tudor has been sacked, which perhaps could bring about a change for David.
