The Vancouver Whitecaps announced Thursday the club has transferred Canadian international defender Derek Cornelius to Swedish outfit Malmo FF.
The 25-year-old Ajax, ON native spent the last two seasons on loan with Greek side Panetolikos, but now joins the 22-time Swedish champions following his call-up to the CanMNT for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

"This agreement made sense for all parties involved and came together fairly quickly after Derek informed us he wanted to stay in Europe," Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster said in a club statement. "We are thankful to Derek for his service to the club and wish him all the best for the future.”
Cornelius joined the Whitecaps in 2019 out of Serbian side Javor Ivanjica, making 37 appearances across all competitions, scoring once. He adds 14 CanMNT appearances to his resume.
He's the latest Canadian international to secure a move to Europe, joining Alistair Johnston (Celtic FC), Ismael Kone (Watford FC) and Dominick Zator (Korona Kielce).
