Cavalry FC today announces that the club’s captain and foundational signing, Nik Ledgerwood, has made the decision to retire from the field of play as a professional footballer.
Ledgerwood spent the early days of his career playing in Europe for various clubs across Germany and Sweden. Most notably, he has represented Canada on the international stage on several occasions, including qualification stages for the 2010, 2014, and 2018 FIFA World Cups. In November 2018, Ledgerwood was proudly introduced as Cavalry FC’s first signing, alongside Sergio Camargo. Proudly donning Cavalry colours, and the yellow captain’s armband, he made 47 appearances across three Canadian Premier League seasons, as well as 5 appearances in Canadian Championship matches. Ledgerwood was a remarkable leader for his teammates, and the wisdom and experience that he brought with him to the pitch was invaluable.
“Nik optimises the words we could all use in our lives about now: grit, energy, drive, resilience and humour. He paved a career for himself when there was no clear pathway and in my mind, became an unsung hero in the history of Canadian soccer due to the longevity of his career and his importance to the national team for many years. To have been able to personally witness the start and finish of his career here in Calgary is an absolute honour. I’m excited to see what his next chapter brings as he has been a trailblazer for many a young Albertan and Canadian kid and now, as a founding father of this Canadian Premier League and our first ever signing, he has been an integral part of creating opportunities closer to home than he himself would have had.” – Tommy Wheeldon Jr. (Head Coach & General Manager of Cavalry FC)
“Nik Ledgerwood was chosen for good reason to be our club’s first signing and our first captain. He is the consummate professional and leader on and off the pitch. He has truly personified “excellence”. His contributions to Cavalry FC and our community have created a worthy legacy and positioned Nik well for the next chapter of his career.” – Ian Allison (President & COO of Cavalry FC)
