Canadian winger Michael Petrasso re-signs with York United

York United FC is excited to announce the re-signing of Canadian forward Michael Petrasso on a one-year deal.

The 27-year-old made 13 appearances in the Canadian Premier League last term, though an early injury greatly hampered his contributions.

Having started the Nine Stripes’ opening game of the campaign against Halifax Wanderers, he was forced off at half-time the following week in an away clash with FC Edmonton and didn’t play again until the middle of July. There followed some brief cameos from the bench until he returned to full fitness and finished the campaign strongly with three successive starts against Valour FC, Forge FC and Atletico Ottawa.

The injury interruption was particularly irritating for the incisive and creative attacker given his performances during the 2021 season where he managed three goals and seven assists across 24 appearances in all competitions and proved a crucial element in the team’s journey to the CPL playoffs. Immediately prior to that campaign, he travelled to London and enjoyed a superb loan stint with Barnet FC of the National League where he scored eight times in 30 appearances and was crowned Player of the Year by the club’s supporters.

Petrasso signed with York United in 2020 and has featured 40 times overall.

“I’m delighted that Mikey returns for a fourth season with us,” says Angus McNab, York United FC’s CEO/President and GM.

“He has performed in big moments and we really believe that he can be a very important player for us in 2023. Last season was certainly frustrating for him but we all feel that he will be back stronger this year. There’s no doubt that a fit and highly-motivated Michael Petrasso is one of the most dangerous players in the league.”

For Head Coach Martin Nash, Petrasso brings vital leadership, experience and natural ability to the table.

“Mikey started the season incredibly well and was just so unfortunate that injury robbed him of the majority of the campaign,” Nash says.

“He always brings a spark and an energy and constantly gives defenders problems. With his pace and skill, he offers an extra dimension for us and I’m really happy he’s back for another year. He’s also a vital member of the squad and adds a real value to the locker room.”
