Canada Soccer announces men's U-20 CanMNT camp for April matches
Canada Soccer have announced their squad for a Men’s U-20 National Team camp in Costa Rica as part of the Men’s National Team Program’s preparations for the upcoming Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Championship in June and July. The 13-day camp runs 10 April to 22 April and will be led by Mauro Biello, the Canada Soccer’s Men’s Olympic Head Coach. The camp will feature a pair of youth international matches against Costa Rica on the mornings of 15 and 21 April.
As part of a wider squad in contention for this summer’s Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Championship, Canada Soccer have invited 25 players to the series in Costa Rica. On account of the global pandemic, this marks the first men’s youth camp in more than two years, with this group featuring players born 2003 or later. The Canada squad features players attached to clubs from eight different countries.
The Canada squad features: goalkeepers Max Anchor, Dino Bontis, Adisa De Rosario and Owen Goodman; centre backs Matteo Campagna, Loïc Cloutier, Jamie Knight-Lebel, and Justin Smith; fullbacks Noah Abatneh, Luc de Fougerolles, Kwasi Poku, and Eric White; mdifielders Matthew Catavolo, Jesse Costa, Maël Henry, Jay Herdman, Gabrielle Pellegrino, Max Piepgrass and Hugo Tavares; and forwards Mataeo Bunbury, Tiago Coimbra, Kamron Habibullah, Ronan Kratt, Shyon Morani and Lowell Wright.
Not included in the series, whether through injury or unavailable for club reasons, are: Keesean Ferdinand, Kobe Franklin, Tomas Giraldo, Luca Koleosho, Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty, Kosi Thompson, Jules-Anthony Vilsaint, and Rida Zouhir. For June and July, Canada can only take 20 players (two goalkeepers and 18 outfield players) to the Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Championship.
CONCACAF MEN’S UNDER-20 CHAMPIONSHIP
Canada have been drawn into Group E for the 2022 Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Championship, a dual qualification tournament for both the Olympic Games in 2024 and the FIFA U-20 World Cup Indonesia 2023. Canada have been drawn into the group phase alongside Cuba, St. Kitts and Nevis and USA from which the top-three teams will advance to the Concacaf Round of 16.
This year’s Concacaf Men’s Under-20 Championship runs from 18 June to 3 July 2022 in San Pedro Sula and Tegucigalpa, Honduras. From the group stage, the knockout phase will feature the Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Championship Final, with the top-four nations qualifying to the FIFA U-20 World Cup (winners from the Quarterfinals) and the top-two nations qualifying for the Olympic Games (winners from the Semifinals).
