CanWNT squad announced for friendlies against Haiti in Winnipeg and Montreal

The latest Canadian women’s national team squad was revealed on Tuesday ahead of upcoming friendlies against Haiti in Winnipeg and Montreal.
The 24-player squad features 17 who were with the national team for their two April friendlies against Argentina in British Columbia.

The first of the games will be a celebration match honouring Desiree Scott in her hometown. The 37-year-old played nearly 200 times for Canada over 15 years, and was part of the squads that made history with back-to-back-to-back medals at the Olympics, including the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Scott announced her retirement at the end of last year, but ended up signing for Ottawa Rapid FC in the inaugural season of the Northern Super League. Now, 15 years after her debut with the national team, she will say farewell at Princess Auto Stadium with her 188th and final appearance.

That game in Winnipeg will be on May 31 (1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT), before the two sides head to Stade Saputo in Montreal for the second game on June 3 (7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT).

Scott is part of a midfield group for this camp that also includes fellow NSL midfielder Emma Regan of AFC Toronto. Marie-Yasmine Alidou and Jessie Fleming from the Portland Thorns and Julia Grosso from the Chicago Red Stars make up the NWSL contingent, while Simi Awujo from Manchester United and Kayla Briggs from Michigan State University round out the group.

The only uncapped player called up to the team is Orlando Pride defender Zara Chavoshi, a Canadian-American dual-national named to the Canadian senior team for the first time. Chavoshi represented Canada at the 2022 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, but in March accepted a call-up to the American U23s and trained with the senior national team. Now, she seems to have committed to Les Rouges.

Returning to the squad for the first time since 2022 is Montpellier defender Marie Levasseur, and she and Chavoshi are joined in the backline by Gabrielle Carle, Vanessa Gilles, Ashley Lawrence, Jade Rose and Shelina Zadorsky. Kailen Sheridan, Sabrina D’Angelo and  Lysianne Proulx are the goalkeepers named to the squad, an ever-present trio for Casey Stoney, and a constant over the past few years.

Up top, Jordyn Huitema, Olivia Smith, and Evelyne Viens all return from injury after missing the last camp. Also in the attacking unit are Adriana Leon, Nichelle Prince, Janine Sonis and Holly Ward – the latter of whom made her national team debut in the last international window against Argentina with Briggs.

Prince, Grosso and Rose all scored in the first game against Argentina, but Canada was held off the scoresheet in the second game in a 1-0 defeat.

Canada has played Haiti three times since their first meeting in 1991, and won all three. Most recently they played in Vancouver in a qualifying match for the 2012 Olympics, with Canada coming away with a 6-0 victory including four goals from Christine Sinclair.

Both of the upcoming friendly matches will be available to watch live on OneSoccer.
