CanMNT captain Alphonso Davies returns to full training with Bayern Munich

For the first time since suffering an ACL tear in March, CanMNT captain Alphonso Davies has returned to full training with Bayern Munich.

Having already been out for eight months, it appears that he won’t be on the sidelines for much longer after this, as there is hope that Davies will be back before the end of the year with Bayern.
After having begun individual training sessions over three months ago, this is the final hurdle before completing a full return, which he’ll hope to do over the coming weeks as he ramps up his sessions.
“I can’t wait to be back on the pitch with my teammates, to help them win games and fight for our goals,” Davies told Bayern’s website last month.
Now, it’s worth noting that despite this big step, it still might be a while before we see him in game action, as it’s not uncommon for players coming back from knee injuries to be in team training for an extended period before being cleared to play matches, given the nature of the injury.
That’s not surprising, however - there’s a reason why the timeline for this sort of injury is typically nine months, a number that perfectly lines up with a potential Davies return in December.
Plus, it’s important to note that Davies’s return to individual training was done ahead of schedule, too, which bodes well for him making a full return without any setbacks, as he’ll have had extra time to build up his body to ensure it can handle the rigours of being back in action.
Now, the big thing to watch for Davies will be his race against a potential return before the end of 2025, as Bayern have eight games before their usual winter break, which will start after their game against Heidenheim on December 21st - they’ll return to action with a match against Wolfsburg on January 11th.
For what it’s worth, it’s hard to imagine Davies starting games until 2026, as he’ll then need to build up match fitness once he gets on the field, but if he can make a substitute cameo or two in 2025, the winter break will offer a good chance for him to build himself a bit more before potentially earning his first start sometime in January or February of 2026.
Certainly, the CanMNT will be following along with close interest, as they’ll hope to have Davies back in a full capacity by March, which will be their next window. With just four games remaining between then and the World Cup, they’ll want to get Davies quickly integrated back into the team as soon as possible, as the captain will have missed 12 consecutive games once they play Venezuela this week.
Of course, Bayern will be extra wary of his Canada involvement after seeing Davies suffer the injury while with them in a match vs. the US this year, but having put the spat that followed the surgery behind them, the big hope will be that Davies can enjoy a productive 2026 for both club and country.
Given that Bayern are off to an excellent start to the 2025-2026 season, and Canada are continuing to progress ahead of a home World Cup, it promises to be a special stretch for Davies, who will push to return to his best and help both teams to what they feel is ahead of them.
