Form Guide: Buchanan scores historic hat-trick in Spain, Jonathan David opens Italian account

The European season is back in full swing, and it’s time to track the progress of Canadians across the globe once again.

This weekend was a historic one for Canadians with Tajon’s heroics in Spain, JD opening his account for Juventus and plenty more notable performances from both CanMNT and CanWNT players.

Here are the biggest stories for Canadian footballers this week:

Tajon Buchanan’s historic hat-trick

When Tajon Buchanan scored a lovely solo effort in the 16th minute against Girona on Sunday, it was already an incredible moment to celebrate for the young Canadian.

But he was far from done there, scoring two more in a 5-0 victory for Villarreal to become the first Canadian to score a hat-trick in La Liga history.

He currently sits top of the La Liga Golden Boot race ahead of the likes of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal. While that probably won’t last, it’s an outstanding confidence boost for Buchanan early in the season, and a clear example of the level he can reach when he is at his best.

For more on Buchanan's heroics, read Alex Gangué-Ruzic’s summary here.

Jordyn Huitema is heating up in Seattle

After being named the NWSL’s player of the week last week, with a goal and an assist against the Chicago Stars, Jordyn Huirema continued her strong play this weekend.

She scored Seattle’s lone goal with a lovely header in a 1-1 draw with the Houston Dash, earning her side a point. It was her third goal of the season.

Seattle currently sits sixth in the table with just one loss in their past five matches.

Jonathan David marks his debut with a goal

There was only one expectation when Jonathan David made his long-awaited debut for Juventus, that he do what he does best, score.

It took the Iceman 59 minutes, but he marked his debut in Serie A by scoring the winner in a 2-0 victory for Juventus against Parma.

The goal was the reward for a strong first performance from JD at Juve, which Alexandre Gangué-Ruzic broke down here.

In other action….

CanMNT

Jacob Shaffelburg started and had a pair of assists in 63 minutes against Orlando City SC in a 5-1 win for Nashville on Saturday. After scoring last week, it has been a strong run of form for the player.

Ismaël Koné was having a strong debut in Serie A for Sassuolo against Napoli, only to see it go south when he was sent off in the 79th minute.

Alistair Johnston will miss several months following an injury suffered in a 0-0 draw for Celtic with Kairat in UEFA Champions League qualifying.

Dayne St. Clair made five saves during a solid performance in a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Saturday.

James Pantemis made a save and kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with San Diego FC. Max Crépeau was an unused substitute and Kamal Miller is out with a lower-body injury.

Mathieu Choinière came into the match in the 25th minute for LAFC in a 1-1 draw with FC Dallas on Saturday.

Promise David suffered an injury in stoppage time for Union Saint-Gilloise during a 0-0 draw with La Louvière.

Daniel Jebbison returned from injury for Preston North End, coming into the match in the 73rd minute of a big 1-0 victory over Ipswich Town.

Tani Oluwaseyi came on in the 63rd minute of Minnesota United’s 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake despite heavy transfer speculation surrounding his future.
