Armstrong: When you think 'Tokyo 2020', you think about one person
Canadian women's soccer stalwart Stephanie Labbe announced plans to retire (in April) from professional soccer following a career that spanned multipel decades and included a captivating performance during last year's summer Games.
"There are so many Stephanie Labbe fans out there who are, maybe, new Stephanie Labbe fans who are probably pretty sad right now," the Toronto Star's Laura Armstrong told OneSoccer Today.
"When you think about the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and you think about one person in-particular from that gold medal-winning national team I think you're thinking about Stephanie Labbe, especially if you were just coming into that environment, that fandom for the women's team."
The 35-year-old Labbe has appeared 85 times for Canada's women's national team, earning 80 starts and accumulating 43 cleansheets.
This following an historic year for Canada's women's natoinal team, which won a Gold Medal at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. On the year, Canada posted seven wins, seven draws and three losses along with a Women’s National Team record 12-match unbeaten streak from February through November in international competition.
