ANALYSIS + HIGHLIGHTS: CanMNT vs. Panama (Oct. 15, 2024)
The Canadian men's national team picked up a 2-1 win over Panama to mark their return home to Canada after an extended stretch of away matches under new head coach Jesse Marsch in 2024, fighting for a late winner in front of 23,000+ at BMO Field.
A scrappy first half highlighted by a few Jonathan David looks at goal and plenty of fouls ended with jubilation as the Canadian high press paid off in the 45th minute, as Cyle Larin pounced on an Ali Ahmed recovery to score his 30th goal for country – restoring his lead in the all-time team top-scoring race ahead of Jonathan David at 29.
But while the stop-start nature of the match didn't change much in the opening stanza of the second half, the scoreline did, as Jose Fajardo found an equalizer in the 70th minute, slipping past the backline and getting his effort past Max Crepeau for 1-1.
The game was settled in the 88th minute, however, as Jonathan David – not to be left behind by Larin on the night – scored his 30th goal for country to make it 2-1, combining with Liam Millar for the tap-in, cool as you like.
