Alphonso Davies out for six weeks after suffering hamstring injury in Bayern Munich clash with Mainz
Canadian Men’s National Team star Alphonso Davies will be sidelined for at least the next six weeks after suffering a hamstring injury over the weekend.
The injury occurred during Bayern Munich's 3-1 defeat against Mainz this past Saturday. There, Davies pulled up grabbing his leg after making a bursting run down the left-hand side, forcing him to leave the field just nine minutes into the match.
Bayern Munich announced that the Canadian International suffered a hamstring injury and will be out “for the time being,” and that his return will depend on how well his recovery progresses.
According to German newspaper BILD, it’s expected that the left back will miss the remainder of the season, which will be on May 27th when they visit Köln to close off the 2022-2023 Bundesliga campaign. AZ reporter Patrick Strasser states that Davies could return before that match, but that would be in the best-case scenario, resulting in him targeting a return around mid-May.
Davies' injury is not just a concern for Bayern’s push for the Bundesliga title for the remainder of the season, however, but also for the Canadian national team, who are set to compete in the CONCACAF Nations League finals in June. There, they’re getting set to face Panama in the semi-finals in Las Vegas on June 15th, which is approximately seven weeks from now.
Based on his current timeline, he should be able to return in time for that game, but it remains to be seen how fit he’d be at that stage, and if Bayern might hold him back for precautionary reasons.
On the flipside, Davies’ potential lay-off could be a blessing in disguise for Canada, serving as an offseason of sorts for him, which could pave the way for him being available for both the Nations League and Gold Cup should he return to full health.
Either way, Canadians will be keeping a close eye on his recovery, the latest setback in a topsy-turvy season for the 22-year-old, one he’ll be eager to put behind him as he gets set for what’s to come in his future.
