FIFA's new 'Football Video Support' replay system debuts in CPL opener... so what did we think? 👀
FIFA is trialing a new form of video replay in the 2026 Canadian Premier League season, and we saw it in action in the first game of the campaign as Forge FC's penalty was challenged by Atlético Ottawa... so what did we make of this new format?
It didn't take long for the drama to begin in the Canadian Premier League – less than 20 minutes into the afternoon, Atlético Ottawa goalkeeper Tristan Crampton brought down Forge's Brian Wright in the box, and the referee awarded the hosts a penalty.
However, Ottawa head coach Diego Mejia challenged the call, initiating the first Football Video Support review in CPL history.
The penalty was upheld, Wright took it himself, and scored from the spot to give Forge the lead with the first goal of the season.
Mejia and Ottawa issued another challenge in the second half, leading to a lengthier delay... so what did we make of the new video replay system in action?
